The open workshop for art and culture (OWCA) location

The OWCA is located in the middle of the West Bank, 13 km from Rammallah City and 10 minutes from Birzeit University Campus. The Residency houses lie in an open rural area emerges on western Ramallah City Mountains implied in Beit Anat housing project.

The participation cost

Tuition is $250 for one full week of residency including accommodation and equipment. Application fees are $30. The total program cost is $280.

Food is not included and the resident is responsible of buying his/her meals. Restaurants and supermarkets are 3 minutes walk of the residency house

The summer residency program credit bearing

No academic credit is awarded by the program.

Previous experiences

Since the program is self-directed, residents must be accustomed to working independently on their artwork. Residents may be self-taught, and are not required to possess a degree of higher education.

Enrollment in a college or university

Residents do not need to be enrolled in another college or university. The program is not intended for undergraduate study.

Preferred citizenship and visas requirement

No. Residents may enroll from abroad. Upon acceptance, you will be contacted as to what visas, etc. may be required. In most instances, a tourist visa will suffice.

Participants should reside in on-campus housing in order to participate in the summer residency program

Residents should reside in-campus to participate in the program. Since the residence is situated in the workshop studios, it is a must for its convenience, affordability, and the opportunity to interact with fellow residents.

Smoking during the program and in the studio

YES. The studios and residence are suited for smokers

People with disabilities

YET, the studios and the workshop are not suitable and prepared for handicapped and wheelchairs. It is planned to equip the studios for handicapped during the next year.

Shipping artwork or supplies to/from OWCA

During registration, residents will be given a list of contact names and addresses with guidelines as to whom to contact for various purposes, including shipping. Residents are responsible for arrangement and payment of shipping. At least one artwork should be dedicated to the workshop and the other artwork and material must be removed from the studios by the residents upon the close of the Program. The OWCA cannot pay to ship or store artwork, materials, or other belongings.

Equipment availability

Each participant is provided with a semi-private studio, a worktable, chair, materials cabinet, shatterproof jars, paint rags and gloves. Additional equipment is available for checkout, such as: tools, lights, and slide projector.

Specific equipment could be furnished upon request.

Availability of technical support

Yes, there will be a technician on duty during studio hours.

Buying supplies

OWCA is located within 15 minutes drive distance of the largest market in the country.

The apartments

Each apartment is a self-contained with its own bathroom and kitchenette. The kitchenette consists of a refrigerator, sink, gas burners, a microwave oven and limited cabinet space. The apartment is a one-bedroom unit and could be shared by other persons.

Furniture provided

Each resident is provided with a twin bed, desk, TV and a satellite channels receiver, DVD system, and a bookshelf. Each unit has a kitchen table, chairs, microwave stand, refrigerator, and a garden. Units are not carpeted.

Facilities supplied by the building

The building contains a laundry room equipped with washers, a study room equipped with drawing tables and desks, and Gardens for social gatherings.

Moving in

Residents check-in on any day. Detailed move-in instructions will be sent during the registration process. For security reasons, residents may not move in before coordinating with OWCA staff.

Sending personal items to the residence in advance of moving in

OWCA has a huge storage space, mail and boxes of personal belongings may be sent in advance. Items received prior to the residency program, could be stored.

Sending art supplies in advance of the residency

Art supplies will be accepted up to one week before the start of the program. During registration, residents will be given a list of contact names and addresses with guidelines as to whom to contact for various purposes, including shipping. Residents are responsible for arrangement and payment of shipping.

Telecommunication service

Each workshop has a mobile phone for inland use only. The mobile phones have the capability of calling in country and cannot accept outside calls. Outside calls cannot be made from these lines. You will be supplied with your mobile number when you check-in.

Items needed

In addition to clothing and art supplies, you will need to bring personal hygiene products, clothes hangers, towels and an alarm clock. If you are planning on cooking, dishes, pots and pans, and utensils are available in the residency houses.

Kind of security exists in the residence

The residence has a 24-hour security guard.

The residence policies

Policies for the Residence will be distributed when you arrive. It is important to know in advance that guests and visitors will not be permitted into the Residence unless a resident signs them in and escorts them. You need advance authorization from OWCA representative and the Resident Manager and/or the Program Coordinator to have overnight guests. Your Resident Assistant will help you familiarize yourself with the residency policies once you arrive at OWCA.

OWCA staff

There is a Manager, a Facilities Manager and Program Coordinator who live in the Residency. The Program Coordinator will be your primary contact for all housing concerns. S/he will be identified to you in advance of check-in.

Television service

Basic satellite channel receiver is provided in your apartment; it does not include Showtime, and the like.

Internet service

You can access the Internet from the computers in main residency house or by bringing your own laptop.

The neighborhood

OWCA neighborhood is an extremely exciting area full of a wide variety of natural Mediterranean views. There are many affordable places to eat and shop for groceries. Residents can walk through the mountains and enjoy the natural view of the area.

Residency period

Residents are accepted into the residency for at least a week period or the full duration of the program.
